A 30-day strength training routine — no equipment required

Panicking about trading in your bulky, winter sweaters for sleeveless tops and swimsuits? If you’ve been slacking on your fitness, one of the quickest ways to start toning up is by incorporating strength training routine. It’s an important part of a well-rounded workout program that many of us disregard in favor of cardio-focused exercise. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends incorporating strength training exercises for all major muscle groups into a fitness routine at least two times a week. Not only can it improve bone density and help reduce your risk of osteoporosis, but strength training builds lean muscle mass, which helps burn fat while torching calories (thus fast-tracking progress towards your beach body). Not only will you get physical benefits from strength training, you’ll also score some pretty big mental perks as well. Research shows that strength training is associated with reductions in anxiety symptoms, improvements in cognition and self-esteem, and reduction in depression symptoms and improvement in sleep quality for adults with diagnosed depression. My clients have attested to feeling an increase in energy and feeling more positively a...

Snake under Refrigerator bites 9-month-old Boy playing in kitchen

James, a 9-month old boy was bitten by a Snake on Saturday morning while playing in the kitchen. Jenna Lees-Rofle, the mother of the child said to The Boston Globe that when her child was playing on the kitchen floor, a milk snake appeared from under the refrigerator and attacked her child, it sunk its teeth in the baby’s leg. Jenna was about to prepare breakfast at her home in 133 Fells Ave and had made her son sit on the kitchen floor and play with pots and pans so as to make her child engaged. After a minute when she turned, she saw a 5-foot snake appear from under the refrigerator and bit her child. “I screamed,” Rofle told the newspaper. “I immediately grabbed James and brought him to a safe place in another room with my 3-year-old,” says Jenna in her statement. The snake was later identified as a female milk snake which belonged among the non-venomous type of snakes and is usually found in Massachusetts. Being bought up in Australia, Jenna was already prepared for the worst. “Snakes there can be very vicious,” said Lees-Rofle. “This was nothing like that.” The lady says that the snake might have got frightened by her child who was playing with pots and pans. After checking...

Sonim announces shipments of new Rapid Deployment Kits, upcoming plans for package

Greater communications flexibility soon will be within the grasp of some public-safety agencies, as Sonim Technologies started shipping its Rapid Deployment Kit (RDK-2) with a FirstNet Ready Cradlepoint router and announced plans to further integrate satellite and LMR capabilities into the carry-case package later this year. Bob Escalle, Sonim Technologies’ vice president for public-safety market segments, said the RDK-2 provides deployable LTE and Wi-Fi coverage in a package that is small enough to be carried to locations where a vehicular deployable is not practical. “It extends the range [of LTE by extending an access-point bubble,” Escalle said during an interview with IWCE’s Urgent Communications. “Think of it as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot that you bring with you that has router functionality and a PoE [power-over-Ethernet] switch, with the ability to have a satellite connection for quick failover.” Perhaps most importantly, the RDK-2 is designed to be deployed quickly at an incident scene by first responders, without any need for extensive special training, Escalle said. “You don’t need to be an engineer,” he said. “You pull it out. You flip up the antennas, because the ant...

Have you ever wondered what exactly is a water softener? After all, isn’t all water soft?

Have you ever wondered what exactly is a water softener? After all, isn’t all water soft? Fair point. But water softeners were created to combat a surprisingly common problem: hard water. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, about 85 percent of American households have hard water, including homes with city water and well water. But what exactly is hard water and what can be done about? Glad you asked. The term “hard water” may sound like an oxymoron, but it’s simply household water that contains high concentrations of dissolved minerals, specifically calcium and magnesium. These minerals don’t make water unhealthy to drink. They also are relatively undetectable through smell or taste, but they can be harmful just the same. The effects of elevated mineral levels range from annoying to highly destructive. Hard water causes cloudy water spots on sinks, dishes, silverware, and shower enclosures. White, crusty deposits form on teakettles and coffee pots. Hard water also dramatically reduces the lathering and rinse-ability of laundry detergent, body soap, and shampoo. As a result, laundered clothes appear gray and faded. Bathing and showering in hard water makes your skin feel dr...
