3G and 4G USB modems are a security threat, researcher says

The vast majority of 3G and 4G USB modems handed out by mobile operators to their customers are manufactured by a handful of companies and run insecure software, according to two security researchers from Russia. Researchers Nikita Tarakanov and Oleg Kupreev analyzed the security of 3G/4G USB modems obtained from Russian operators for the past several months. Their findings were presented Thursday at the Black Hat Europe 2013 security conference in Amsterdam. Most 3G/4G modems used in Russia, Europe, and probably elsewhere in the world, are made by Chinese hardware manufacturers Huawei and ZTE, and are branded with the mobile operators’ logos and trademarks, Tarakanov said. Because of this, even if the research was done primarily on Huawei modems from Russian operators, the results should be relevant in other parts of the world as well, he said. Tarakanov said that they weren’t able to test baseband attacks against the Qualcomm chips found inside the modems because it’s illegal in Russia to operate your own GSM base station if you’re not an intelligence agency or a telecom operator. “We’ll probably have to move to another country for a few months to do it,” he said. There’s stil...

Literally putting a price on carbon pollution and other greenhouse gasses is the best approach for

Literally putting a price on carbon pollution and other greenhouse gasses is the best approach for nurturing the rapid growth of renewable energy and reducing emissions. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-1449240174198-2′); }); While prospects for a comprehensive carbon price are dim, especially in the U.S., many other policy approaches can spur the renewables revolution, according to a new policy article published in Nature. The current price of carbon – which is below zero, once fossil-fuel subsidies are taken into account – is far too low given the hidden environmental, health and societal costs of burning coal and oil. The authors – which include Princeton University’s Michael Oppenheimer, Albert G. Milbank Professor of Geosciences and International Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs – urge policymakers to implement a range of policies until the time that a carbon price becomes politically realistic. The article, whose lead author is Gernot Wagner, senior economist at the Environmental Defense Fund, urges modernizing and opening up access to power grids for renewable so...

HUAWEI Watch GT2 review: living & training with week-long battery life

We’ve been using the HUAWEI Watch GT2 as our daily driver for life in general, working and training with it primarily for two months. When it comes to smartwatches, the general conception is that there’s the Apple Watch, and there are the rest. The market share and sales numbers definitely back this up, but then again, on the flip side, there are many more Android smartphones out there than there are iPhones. And, since the Apple Watch doesn’t work (well) with Android phones, there’s a huge opportunity for a manufacturer to tap into that immense market with a top smartwatch for the Android user. However, there’s no real shortage of watches not made by Apple. The competition is fierce, as almost every major Android smartphone manufacturer has a wearable line-up. Can HUAWEI, and its second generation Watch GT2, potentially take the crown this year? That’s what we’re trying to answer, in our HUAWEI Watch GT2 review. When HUAWEI introduced the Watch GT2 on September 19, 2019, in Munich, at the Mate 30, Mate 30 Pro, and PD Mate 30 RS launch event, the company said it was ready to “Rethink Time”. The Watch GT2 gets a new “Purified Design”, with what it calls a Uni-Piece Crystal-Bezel ...

Literacy Spotlight: Bernie’s Book Bank Enriches Chicagoland Children

This article is part of an occasional feature that focuses on literacy organizations and the work they do to promote reading within their communities. One of Brian Floriani’s favorite letters is the handwritten missive from a Chicago Public Schools fourth grader named Makaila addressed to “Mr. Bernie,” thanking him for a bag of books. Writing that she “just wants to hug you tight,” because she is so excited to read the books she has received, she adds that she already read one of the books in the car during her ride home from school. Floriani doesn’t just have a room for the books that he gives away: Bernie’s Book Bank, the literacy nonprofit organization that Floriani founded 10 years ago, in December 2009, and for which he currently serves as chief advancement officer, operates a 35,000 square foot processing center. There, volunteers sort (by grade level and title), sticker, and pack new and gently used books into bags for distribution through its 900+ partners to children in the six-county Chicago metro area. Recipients range from infants to 12-year-olds (grade six) in public, charter, and magnet schools, who, like Makaila, have been identified as “at risk.” These children e...
