Review: Milos Wine Bar at Hudson Yards Charms With Rare Greek Wines

The restaurant is a foil to its flashier upstairs sibling, Estiatorio Milos, offering a far more generous ideation of a mall restaurant To dine at Estiatorio Milos in Hudson Yards, one of the city’s most expensive seafood restaurants, is to witness the efforts of a small army. Over 130 staffers tend to fire-spitting grills, butcher whole fish, turn entire mackerel into tartare a la minute, and carve up turbot tableside in mere moments. To dine downstairs at Milos Wine Bar, however, is to witness a very different ballet, and arguably a more compelling one. Just two or so chefs prepare every item on the much shorter menu. They slice raw tuna and anoint it with yuzu kosho. They lay a sinuous octopus tentacle on a wicked-hot grill. They drizzle Madagascar prawns with olive oil. They shave succulent pork off a rotating spit for gyros. For this four-course feast, plus two glasses of wine, tax, and tip, you pay just $88. That much wouldn’t buy you half a lobster pasta upstairs at dinner. I had strong words for Estiatorio Milos shortly after it opened, and again today. No matter how grand (or average) your Mediterranean-tinged meal there might be, you always feel cheated. Milos Wine Ba...

Tecniplas exports composite chemical storage tanks to Argentina : CompositesWorld

Tecniplas (Cabreúva, Brazil), manufacturer of composite tanks and special equipment, announces that it has dispatched two reservoirs to Argentina. The tanks will be installed in a pulp mill operated by the company Arauco in Puerto Esperanza. Measuring 13.5 meters tall and 4.5 meters in diameter, the larger of the two tanks has been designed to store up to 200 cubic meters of chlorine dioxide, under a pressure of -8 WG. “One of its differentials is the fact of having thermal insulation guaranteed by polyurethane,” explains Luís Gustavo Rossi, director of Tecniplas. The second reservoir, measuring 11.3 meters tall and 4 meters in diameter, with 135 cubic meters of capacity, will be used to store chlorine, chlorate solution and sodium hypochlorite at a temperature of 80°C, under atmospheric pressure. “Its construction project contemplates an internal slope of 2%, which allows the fast and safe depletion of the tank,” Rossi says. Each was manufactured in one piece and includes a series of nozzles and accessories. The tanks are reportedly able to withstand wind loads up to 45 m/s (162 km/h). Arauco has had Tecniplas equipment at its Chilean plants since the 1990s, according to Rossi....

Best Lomography camera: ten great analog film cameras

Lomography or ‘Lomo’ cameras are loved for bringing back the experimental joy of low cost, low-fi analog film photography, and encouraging us to find beauty in all its non-digital imperfections, but there’s a bewildering variety to choose from! Lomography cameras and their output are more about fun over fidelity, and happy accidents rather than photographic perfection and pin sharp detail. You never quite know what you’re going to get from a Lomo camera and either its 35mm or 120 roll film or instant film packs, until you look at the typically unique results. Some of the best film cameras available right now are made by Lomography (Lomography also makes some of the best films to use with them, too.) That fact, as well as Lomography’s funky designs, lurid colour schemes and seemingly crazy (or ‘inspired’) conceptual ideas, is central to the brand’s appeal. We’re talking more ‘garage’ quality than gallery quality here. Yes, Lomo cameras are the punk rockers of the photographic world, seemingly kicking against the slick synth pop of the purely digital-biased, mainstream camera brands. They’re easy to use, too, as most of them are simple point and shoot cameras. Latterly...

Are Stocks In The Non-Energy Minerals Sector Investable? Part 13

The examples presented in the video clearly illustrate that operating results are more important and relevant than shorter-term stock price volatility. I have never believed in investing in a stock with only the hope that it might go up or that it might pay me an attractive dividend. The Non-Energy Minerals Sector is mostly comprised of very cyclical and typically commodity-based companies. Consequently, very few companies in this sector offer the consistency and predictability that prudent and/or conservative investors might require. As a result, I personally tend to eschew investing in companies in this sector. In addition to the general cyclical nature of their businesses, income seeking investors might also note the unpredictability and/or reliability of their dividend income streams. Nevertheless, this series of articles is presented with the objective of covering all the sectors that FactSet reports on. Therefore, it is only appropriate that I cover all the sectors comprised of individual stocks. However, I do want to be clear that this sector is not one that I consider appropriate for prudent long-term investing. With that said, more active investors might find trading op...

Hawaii Hiker Found Alive After Being Lost 17 Days In The Woods Says She Wasn’t Carrying A Cellphone

Amanda Eller speaks out about what she should have differently prior to getting lost in a Hawaiian jungle. On May 8, a yoga instructor named Amanda Eller decided to embark upon what she planned to be a quick day hike in a Hawaiian jungle. She was alone and wanted to truly connect with nature without the distraction of modern conveniences. Thus, she left her cellphone behind. Along the way she became disoriented and veered far off the trail. She was unable to find her way back and became badly lost for 17 days. Miraculously, she was found alive. Although she was dehydrated, sustained a knee injury, swollen foot, and broken leg, she is grateful to be able to tell her story. On Tuesday, she spoke out in a candid interview, during which she explained what she should have done differently, according to CNN. Eller recognized that her major mistake was leaving her phone behind. If she hadn’t done so, she likely could have used it as a valuable resource to get her bearings and find her way back to her car. She also warned other hikers that it is best to go into your journey being over prepared rather than being sorry later. Amanda Eller said the 17 days she was lost in a Hawaii forest w...

Makeup is weirdly personal. There’s so much choice – matte finish, dewy finish, satin finish, gloss, sticks, powders, creams, crémes, volumising, lengthening – that each potion you’ve settled on in some attempt to liven up your flesh prison is probably the end result of years of trial and error. For most, this tends to start with you smearing Dream Matte Mousse and Barry M glitter all over your face – a teenage rite of passage as entrenched as getting profoundly drunk on your mum’s Christmas Bailey’s and throwing up all over yourself. The habit of trying out new products continues indefinitely, however, as the world of makeup is ruled by trends. There is, after all, always a new Cucumber Plumping Anti-Wrinkle Metallic product to be hawked to the gullible idiot walking around Boots on their lunch and chucking things in the basket in some sort of trance, before experiencing a minor heart attack at the self-checkout because they have somehow spent £52. Each person’s makeup bag, therefore, is a specific representation of their style and tastes, and a clue as to how they’d like to be seen by the world. And yes, sure, while you are of course a special baby who ...

Meet the Product Designer Who Made Mid-Century America Look Clean and Stylish | Innovation

Raymond Loewy, the legendary American product designer and businessman, isn’t familiar to consumers today, but in the latter half of the 20th century he was a household name for his practice of applying the principles of what he called “cleanlining” to create starkly memorable designs. The 1934 Sears refrigerator; the packaging for Lucky Strike cigarettes; the Exxon logo; dozens of car models for the Studebaker Automobile Company—all were Loewy’s designs. Following his credo that “the loveliest curve I know is the sales curve,” Loewy moved millions of products for clients such as Coca-Cola, Nabisco, Armour and Frigidaire. The French-born Loewy also applied the tenets of cleanlining—reducing the look of a product to its essence, without frills or needless detail—to build his own uniquely American persona. Reinvention is a recurring theme in American literature and legend, and like the products he re-envisioned, Loewy, too, managed his public image from the moment he immigrated to the United States, continually editing and polishing his biography over more than a half-century as he worked as a designer and artist. He built one of the most successful design firms in history, and po...

However, these refrigerants are classified as mildly flammable and highly flammable respectively. This flammability class raises safety and compliance concerns. This webinar will help you understand these classes, along with the opportunities these refrigerants can offer. In this issue of The NEWS, we focus on rooftops and air handlers. We also examine the impact of health care on HVAC contractors and take a look at duct system performance. Closed Cooling Tower, Heat Exchanger, Air Source Heat Pump R...

Wine of the week: truly groundbreaking wines from China

2017 Château Changyu Moser XV, Cabernet Sauvignon Blanc de Noir, Ningxia, China £15.95, Slurp.co.uk; £18.99, selfridges.com This week I have a wine story that sounds so outlandish and improbable that it simply could not be true. But it is. I met with Lenz Moser last week, one of Austria’s most renowned winemakers, in order to taste his brand new Chinese releases. As a precursor to his range he opened a 1996 Lenz Moser cabernet, which he made in his homeland in one of the worst red-wine vintages in living memory. This 23-year-old pale rosé-hued wine was lively, impressive, elderflower and blackberry leaf-scented and thoroughly beguiling. Of course, it should have been a red wine, but the vintage conditions were so poor that the skins gave up no colour and so Lenz had to make a white wine with the merest tinge of cabernet skin. Fast forward to today and Lenz poured me the second vintage of his “white cabernet” from Changyu Moser. China is not yet a destination for curious white-wine lovers, but Lenz uses his superb cabernet vines to make white, rosé and red wines. This 2017 is a bright, clean, lifted and refreshing white – it is unlike any other wine in the world. Serendipity, vi...

Please note: The video above explains how to tile a bathroom wall. but the principles apply

Please note: The video above explains how to tile a bathroom wall. but the principles apply for kitchen tiling, and other rooms in your home. Cut a wooden batten so it’s just longer than half the wall you’re tiling. Place tiles and spacers along its length and mark onto the batten. Mark the horizontal midpoint of the wall with a pencil. Line your tile gauge up with this point so one of its marks is on the centre point. If the gap at the corner is less than half a tile, move your central tile gauge exactly half a tile’s width to the right of the midpoint. This will ensure you end up with a larger cut tile in the corner and the end result will look much better. Adjust the position as before if the gap is less than half tile, and mark the position of the first whole tile above floor level. If your lines are free from pipes and wires, then screw the wooden battens into place so you know exactly where to start your tiling from. Using a trowel, apply enough adhesive to cover up to one square metre. Use the notched spreader to comb the adhesive across the tile to get an even coverage. Do not use the dot and dab method to apply adhesive as this can cause tiles to crack and moisture to ...
