In Coronavirus Crisis, Korean City Tries Openness, a Contrast to China

Even in the center of the outbreak in Daegu, officials are not restricting the movement of people, which could be a template as the virus moves around the globe. DAEGU, South Korea — The usually crowded shopping and partying district in this city of 2.4 million is quieter these days after officials urged citizens to stay home to contain an explosive outbreak of the coronavirus. But many restaurants and bars remain open, waiting for customers who seldom come. A noodle restaurant put out the sign: “Please come in! We thoroughly disinfect this place twice a day.” In a Starbucks outlet, four workers in surgical masks chanted a cheerful “welcome” when a visitor stepped in. Usually jam-packed with young people, there wasn’t a single customer inside. Daegu, the center of South Korea’s ballooning coronavirus outbreak, is trying a less rigid approach to keep the health threat at bay: aggressively warning residents to take precautions while staying open for business. It is a stark contrast to the strict lockdown in Wuhan, China, where government restrictions on movement have barricaded most of the city’s 11 million residents in their homes. “People have been scared and don’t want to ventu...

How to get an ‘ab crack’ like Emily Ratajkowski

Usually on Academy Awards night, it’s the outfits that get the most attention, and while there were some stunning looks on show at the Vanity Fair Oscars party, it was what Emily Ratajkowski wasn’t wearing, that got people talking. The model chose a white bandeau crop top and low-slung maxi skirt, the minimalist matching set showcasing her incredibly toned stomach and famous ‘ab crack’.Emily Ratajkowski attending the Vanity Fair Oscar Party (Ian West/PA) Some people thought the tube top was a bit too revealing for such a glitzy A-list event, but showbiz presenter Ksenija Lukich summed up our thoughts when she commented on Instagram: “If I had abs like that, I’d probs wear that too.” If we started doing 1,000 sit-ups a day, would we all end with a deep ab crack running down the middle of our torso? Or is the 28-year-old’s body the result of genetics, rather than gym visits? “Everyone has abs under there somewhere – they just need to be revealed,”  says Adam Pinder, head trainer at F45 Peckham Rye. “Emily is blessed with some pretty fantastic genes and a low body fat percentage, combine that with a decent work ethic and you’ve got the recipe for some well-defined abs.” “It’s true...

Since 2015, China’s agricultural machinery industry has entered a stage of deep adjustment. It slumped in 2016 and 2017 and remained a low level in 2018 with the annual revenue growth rate of 1.67%. Manual Assembly Presses Are Simple and Flexible | 2013-09-09

Like soldiers, rows of BalTec Corp. manual assembly presses stand ready to work at electronic manufacturing plants throughout North America. Workers there use the presses to crimp wires to terminals and connectors. The company’s presses are also used extensively in the auto industry. Chuck Rupprecht, vice president and general manager for BalTec Corp., says the presses are often located near, and used in conjunction with, riveting equipment. “One of our Tier 1 customers in Michigan makes linkages for cars and trucks,” notes Rupprecht. “Their assemblers use a pneumatic machine to insert rivets and then use a manual press to insert a bushing.” At its simplest, a manual press consists of a metal frame, ram and lever. The worker mounts a part in the base fixture and sets the ram height. He then pulls on the lever to press the ram (with tooling) down onto the part. Simple operation is not the only appeal of manual presses, explains Rupprecht. They also cost much less and offer greater flexibility than pneumatic or servo-driven presses. Over the last 20 years, suppliers have further increased the appeal of manual presses by increasing their output-force capacity, and offering quality...

Researchers created an aluminum blanket that wraps around homes to prevent them from burning down in a fire, Business Insider

When firefighters enter a burning building, they wear clothing designed to resist the flames. So why shouldn’t homes get protective gear to fend off a blaze? “Most everything we use in home construction can burn,” Marko Bourne, a former Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) official, told Business Insider last year. “Our homes will always have flammable materials.” In California, the Kincade Fire has destroyed 94 homes in wine country, while the Getty Fire in Los Angeles had claimed another 12 homes as of Thursday. Buildings best equipped to withstand a wildfire are usually made of steel, concrete, or brick. But any home can be vulnerable under the right circumstances. Construction materials like plastics and laminates, Bourne said, can become exceptionally hot. Homes with broken or open windows, flammable landscape materials, or gutters littered with debris are also quick to ignite. Engineers have long toyed with ways to seal off homes to protect them from wildfires. Wrapping an entire home in a protective blanket, some scientists figure, could prevent embers from entering a building or catching its exterior. Now, a new study has found evidence that the solution could actu...
